The world that the game is located in should be full of wonder as well as evil. Not all encounters are meant for battle. Some encounters can be how to deal with a trap, or even nicer, a scenery that can make the players happy knowing that there job is helping in at least part of the world.
They can save a settlement from evil, then adventure else where. When they come back to the saved settlement, they do not have to be there for yet another evil to deal with. They can come back to a thriving area, brighter then when they left it. They could be coming back when there is a festival going on, or getting set up.
The world need not be totally gloomy, bringing out the nice views will make your world more living. Make the adventures proud that they do make a difference.
